Georges Mazilu Romanian, b. 1951

Georges Mazilu (Romania, 1951) is an internationally renowned artist whose work masterfully bridges contemporary surrealism with the symbolic traditions of the Northern Renaissance. Following his escape from communist Romania in 1982, Mazilu settled in France, where he developed a profoundly unique and enigmatic visual language.

 

Raised in a working-class family, Mazilu’s earliest artistic influence came from his father, a master tailor. The intricate geometric patterns, fabrics, and structural drafts from his father's workshop heavily informed the stylized, complex garments worn by his painted figures. His exceptional talent led him to a rigorous classical education at the Nicolae Tonitza Fine Arts School and the prestigious Grigorescu Art Institute in Bucharest, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in 1974. Under the strict Ceaușescu regime, he was forced to master anatomy and realism to absolute perfection. It was only after fleeing to Paris that he found the creative freedom to fuse this flawless academic training with surrealism.

 

His paintings are populated by mysterious, anthropomorphic characters that exist between the human and the otherworldly, drawing inspiration from the grotesque worlds of Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Mazilu’s process is entirely intuitive, allowing figures to emerge organically from abstract markings. Utilizing a restrained, often sepia-toned palette alongside a delicate use of chiaroscuro, he crafts a timeless atmosphere of quiet reflection.

 

Georges Mazilu’s work is held in prestigious public collections worldwide, including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Denver Art Museum, and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and remains a highly celebrated fixture at Morren Galleries.
