Eric Morren Dutch, b. 1970
Eric Morren (1970, De Bilt) studied at the Graphic Lyceum in Utrecht and opened his first studio, Atelier Eric, at Oudegracht 340 at the age of 22. What began as a studio and exhibition space for his own abstract paintings quickly developed into a gallery and meeting place for other artists. Morren proved to be a passionate gallerist and eventually expanded to multiple locations in Utrecht, Amsterdam and Haarlem.
After a period of reflection, Morren decided to return to basics by maintaining only the gallery at Oudegracht 340, creating space for a renewed personal artistic practice. He turned to sculpture, taught himself welding, and rapidly developed his own visual language.
Morren’s welded steel sculptures employ a restrained geometric visual language of vertical axes and circular elements. Rooted in early twentieth-century modernism and constructivist traditions, the works also evoke a post-Apollo 11 futurism through their industrial materials and upward orientation.
At once architectural and instrumental, the sculptures can be read as antennas or receivers mediating between earth and cosmos, while their totemic forms reference tribal and ritual objects. Through this synthesis of modernist clarity, space-age optimism and archaic symbolism, Morren’s sculptures function as hybrid forms that unite an industrial aesthetic with a sense of metaphysical resonance.
