Kees Blom Dutch, b. 1968

Biography

Kees Blom (1968, Apeldoorn) was born into an artistically inclined family. Although his father nurtured a strong interest in painting, it was Blom who established himself as an independent professional artist.

From an early age, he was exposed to drawing, close observation of nature, and a reflective approach to perception, influences that shaped both his visual language and artistic mindset. His formative development was guided less by formal education than by sustained observation and lived experience.

Blom’s practice is firmly grounded in the classical tradition of realist painting and is distinguished by exceptional technical precision and refined material handling. A deliberately restrained palette is characteristic of his work, yet subtle tonal modulation and numerous intermediary hues generate nuanced chromatic depth. Light plays a central role in Blom’s oeuvre, particularly his sustained exploration of backlighting, which has become a defining formal and conceptual element. In recent years, he has focused on large-scale depictions of simple objects - most notably bowls, sometimes accompanied by fruit - presented without explicit spatial context. Through meticulous rendering of surface and texture, these motifs attain a heightened presence, while the absence of narrative distraction directs attention towards form, light, and materiality.

Blom conceives painting as a meditative act, which resonates in the experience of his work. His compositions are serene and restrained, creating a sense of stillness and calm. By isolating a single object and rendering it with great finesse, his paintings open a contemplative space for the viewer.
