Frans Franciscus Dutch, b. 1959
Frans Franciscus (Utrecht, 1959) has established a distinctive position within contemporary Dutch figurative art through an oeuvre that reinterprets the visual language of the Old Masters. He studied at the Utrecht School of the Arts between 1982 and 1986 and has since developed a highly personal body of work spanning painting, ceramics and photography. Living and working in Amsterdam, he has exhibited extensively in the Netherlands and abroad.
Drawing inspiration from artists such as Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Caravaggio and Hendrick ter Brugghen, Franciscus revisits biblical, mythological and historical subjects with remarkable technical skill and originality. Rather than recreating the past, he transforms familiar compositions into contemporary narratives that explore themes of identity, power, religion, inequality and the complexities of human behaviour.
Although best known as a painter, Franciscus also creates ceramic sculptures and photographic works, extending his fascination with history, symbolism and the human condition across different media. His richly layered oeuvre combines classical craftsmanship with wit, irony and subtle social commentary. Contemporary figures inhabit timeless settings, inviting the viewer to look beyond the immediate beauty of the work and discover narratives that are at once playful, unsettling and intellectually engaging.
