Frits Goosen Dutch, 1943

Biografie

Frits J. Goosen (1943, Hilversum) is regarded as one of the leading Dutch contemporary Impressionist painters. From an early age, he showed a strong aptitude for drawing and painting and was able to observe the working practice of the painter Stephen Kip, who maintained a studio nearby. Although formal artistic training was financially unattainable, these early encounters proved formative. Goosen completed his military service as a signalman in the Dutch Navy, after which he worked for eleven years at a barge shipping company. Throughout this period, drawing and painting remained his principal passion.

In 1976, Goosen committed himself fully to a professional career as a painter. He initially spent three and a half years working for the painter and art dealer Hans van Moerkerken in Weesp, who provided guidance and introduced him to the foundations of the painter’s craft.

Goosen is particularly renowned for his depictions of rivers, harbours, and maritime environments. Landscapes, harbour scenes, and city views form an important part of his oeuvre, yet ship portraits occupy a central position within his work. His fascination with sailing has been a recurring theme, with a particular focus on vessels of the bruine vloot and the Dutch charter sailing fleet. He regularly participates in sailing regattas aboard these ships, and major maritime events such as SAIL Amsterdam have consistently served as sources of inspiration.

The foundation of Goosen’s paintings lies in drawings, watercolours, and photographs made on site. These studies are subsequently developed in the studio into oil paintings, informed by both his imagination and visual memory. His knowledge of trees, livestock, and the technical construction of ships is integral to the precision and authenticity of his compositions. Goosen is intimately familiar with the Dutch charter fleet, often knowing individual vessels by name and distinguishing their specific structural characteristics. Goosen employs a vivid palette and fluid brushwork to convey the movement of water and the play of light on sails and waves. His ability to evoke atmosphere and mood has earned him acclaim as one of the leading impressionist painters of his generation. Goosen's art not only reflects his technical mastery but also serves as a tribute to the enduring legacy of Dutch maritime culture.

In addition to exhibiting widely throughout the Netherlands, Goosen has regularly shown his work internationally, including in Switzerland, Norway, England, and the United States. Over the course of his career, he has received several awards in recognition of his artistic achievements.
