From 4 October, we present an exhibition of 23 paintings by Julien Landa, created over the past few years. From carefully composed still lifes to tranquil views of Paris, his paintings reveal a keen eye for the small things that bring colour to life. A simple breakfast, ripe figs or empty chairs in the Tuileries become an invitation to pause and look more closely.
Born in Rotterdam in 1947, Julien Landa initially worked as a freelance photographer. Following a period in France, he turned to painting at around the age of thirty-five, finding his own path as a self-taught artist. His work draws on the Dutch tradition of finely detailed painting, with particular attention to light, texture and composition. Its stillness and subtle interplay of light and shade recall the Dutch Old Masters, while his use of colour and choice of subjects give the paintings a distinctive, contemporary character.
A distinctly French atmosphere runs through the works on display. In Petit déjeuner, a croissant, strawberries and a milk bottle acquire an almost tangible presence; in Vijgen uit Frankrijk (Figs from France) deep blue pottery and ripe fruit form a harmonious ensemble. The view of the Tuileries conveys the same tranquillity, with soft light filtering through the trees and chairs seemingly awaiting their next visitor. Landa thus brings still life and the city view into close conversation: intimate worlds in which the everyday becomes quietly remarkable.
We warmly welcome you to the gallery to discover Julien Landa’s paintings and enjoy them at your leisure.
