Johfra Dutch, 1919-1998

Biography

Johfra (born Johannes Franciscus van den Berg, 1919–1998) was a Dutch painter whose work occupies a unique position at the intersection of symbolism, esotericism, and meticulously rendered realist painting. Trained at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, he developed an early interest in mysticism, mythology, and hermetic philosophy - interests that remained central throughout his oeuvre. His artist’s name, Johfra, is a contraction of his given names.

Johfra’s paintings are distinguished by their exceptional technical refinement and densely layered compositions, filled with mythological figures, astrological symbolism, and archetypal imagery. Executed with a precision reminiscent of the Northern Renaissance, his works invite slow, contemplative viewing and often feel like visual gateways into spiritual or psychological inner worlds. While clearly rooted in classical craftsmanship, his art aligns closely with the visionary and fantastical traditions of the twentieth century.

Despite - or perhaps because of - their strong metaphysical undertones, Johfra’s works elicited sharply divided responses. A wide audience embraced his paintings with great enthusiasm, particularly following the large-scale distribution of his now iconic zodiac posters in the 1970s, which brought his imagery into homes around the world and established his reputation as a cult figure. At the same time, critics often dismissed or overlooked his work due to its overtly esoteric themes, resulting in a remarkable combination of broad popular success and limited institutional recognition. Over the years, numerous publications have been devoted to his life and work.

In the mid-1990s, gallery owners Eric and Séverine Morren came into contact with the artist, who had by then fallen into relative obscurity. His house and studio in France were filled with paintings, and the gallerists immediately recognised both the exceptional quality of his oeuvre and the need to bring this remarkable master back into the spotlight. After forming a warm friendship, they organised a series of solo exhibitions at the gallery and presented his work at various art fairs. The timing proved ideal: collectors emerged from all sides and acquired his works in significant numbers.

Johfra passed away in 1998, at the height of this renewed interest, after which retrospectives and further publications followed, confirming his lasting influence on visionary and symbolic art.
