Wout Muller Dutch, 1946-2000

Biography

Wout Muller (1946 – 2000) was born in Hilversum and studied at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. From 1971 to 1990, he taught at the Minerva Academy of Fine Arts in Groningen. During this period, he managed to secure an important place among Groningen's figurative artists and ultimately within Northern Realism.

Eroticism is central to Wout Muller's work: through slightly erotic images, the viewer is granted a glimpse into paradise. His works are always static and exude an atmosphere of serene anticipation. His great fascination with biology is evident. His dreamlike imagery often combines female nudes with all kinds of forms from nature: mushrooms, snails, trees, plants, etc.

In addition to paintings, watercolours and graphic art, Muller has designed hundreds of book covers, three-dimensional objects and monumental works. Often in collaboration with Matthijs Röling (1943 - 2024), he created large wall and ceiling paintings in the auditorium of the Academy Building of the University of Groningen and in the foyer of the De Oosterpoort cultural centre (Groningen), as well as an erotic cabinet in the Nijsinghhuis in Eelde.

In 1994, he moved with his wife, visual artist Clary Mastenbroek from Groningen to a former wool mill in Waterford (Ireland), Fairbrook House on the River Dawn. Here they created their own paradise: 3.5 acres of formal garden with water features and stonework from the former mill buildings incorporated into the design.

In 2000, he died of cardiac arrest in his garden. Posthumously, Morren Galleries organised a retrospective of his work in Museum Jan in Amstelveen in 2002, and in 2008 and 2020, the Drents Museum in Assen also showed an overview of his work.

Wout Muller is one of the leading figures in Dutch figurative painting, his works have been widely exhibited in the Netherlands and are held in numerous private and public collections. His legacy endures not only through his own body of work but also through the lasting influence he exerted on Dutch realist painting at the turn of the century.
