Laurent Parcelier French, b. 1962
Laurent Parcelier (Chamalières, 1962) is a French artist, designer and former comic book author, whose paintings captures the warmth of sun-drenched landscapes and the magic of everyday life. Bathed in light and shadow, his paintings exude an almost dreamlike serenity, inviting the viewer to lose themselves in a world of harmony and tranquillity.
Parcelier studied art at the École Duperré in Paris, after which he published eight comic albums for the Casterman publishing house. He is best known in the Dutch-speaking world as the author of the comic series 'Het geheim van de 7 bollen' (The Secret of the Seven Spheres). The stories are set in a fantasy world and were originally published between 1988 and 1996. In 2014, the entire series was re-released in French, with new colouring. His drawing style made him a typical representative of the clear line style.
In 1996, he stopped writing and drawing comic books to devote himself exclusively to painting.
This turning point in his career came in an unexpected way: a painting competition on the street, where he took his first steps in painting using only borrowed materials, a canvas, paint and brushes. This spontaneous moment opened up a new world for Parcelier. While his comic strips contained dynamism and narrative, he found in painting a way to fully express his love of light, colour and composition.
Parcelier's style developed into a unique fusion of impressionism and an almost mosaic-like technique, in which he breaks light down into small fragments to create a radiant, almost magical effect. His landscapes and cityscapes, often bathed in the glow of the late afternoon sun, convey a sense of nostalgia and timelessness. His paintings are part of private collections around the world.
