Victor Muller Dutch, b. 1976

Biography

Victor Muller (1976, Den Helder) studied at the Grafisch Lyceum Rotterdam and at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. A Dutch artist with an already considerable and impressive body of work. His work evokes a world in which he would most like to live, a place where silence, the eternity of the moment and an escape from hectic existence take centre stage. The concept of timelessness is therefore very important to him. He combines his landscapes with still lifes in the foreground consisting of objects that all seem to come from ancient times. Together, the still life and the landscape form a combination in which the atmosphere of timelessness is clearly palpable.

Muller feels an affinity with painters such as Vermeer, Chardin, Hynckes, William Baily, but also Fra Angelico. He also feels an affinity with the contemporary Pietro Annigoni and, of course, his great inspiration Giovanni Bellini. The light in Victor Muller's paintings is therefore always subdued and filtered; nowhere is there a blackest black or a whitest white. In Victor Muller's paintings, the background is as much a still life as the foreground.

Against the backdrop of a tightly staged Tuscan landscape, he places a composition of artefacts that all seem to come from ancient times. The decaying still life - literally a “Natura Morta” or Vanitas - reinforces the immobility of the “immortalised” landscape behind it, maximising the sense of timelessness. The artist himself says: "That atmosphere is very important to me, the idea that the landscape is, as it were, standing still, no sun, no wind, no rain, no time, just an eternal constant."

Victor Muller has been a regular exhibitor at Morren Galleries for many years and has been represented at numerous national and international art fairs. In addition to his independent work, Muller regularly creates commissioned pieces, including portraits.
