Walter Elst Belgium, b. 1955
Walter Elst (1955, Antwerp) is a Belgian painter known for his refined realism and meticulous attention to detail. Although he initially studied medicine, he soon chose to follow his true vocation as an artist. His early artistic foundation was laid in childhood, when he became a pupil of the landscape painter Leon Lommaert (1904-1978) - an experience that instilled in him a lifelong appreciation for observation, craftsmanship and the natural world. Elst later continued to develop as a largely self-taught painter, building on these formative influences with disciplined study and practice. Two monographs, including Walter Elst: De natuur is voor mij mooi genoeg, document the evolution of his work and his dedication to traditional techniques.
Elst works primarily in oil, creating still lifes, floral compositions and landscapes that combine clarity, harmony and a serene sense of balance. His paintings are characterised by precise rendering, subtle tonal transitions and a deep appreciation for the beauty of everyday natural forms. Drawing inspiration from the Flemish Primitives and 17th-century still-life masters, he employs classical methods to achieve a luminous realism that feels both timeless and contemporary. Themes such as tranquillity, natural abundance and quiet observation play a central role in his oeuvre.
Since 1996, Elst has exhibited extensively with Morren Galleries, where his work has been the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions. His paintings are held in private collections in Belgium, the Netherlands and beyond, and he is widely recognised for his contribution to contemporary Flemish realism.
