Nikolas Antoniou (1988, Larnaca) is a contemporary Cypriot painter whose work navigates the delicate boundary between the figurative and the abstract. Since graduating from the University of Western Macedonia in 2012, Antoniou has developed a distinctive visual language that prioritises the raw, emotional process of painting over rigid narrative or premeditated answers.
His canvases often feature the human form, yet these figures are rarely presented as static portraits. Instead, they occupy "vague spaces," interacting with blurred objects and ethereal landscapes that suggest a state of constant flux. By avoiding definitive themes, Antoniou invites the viewer to engage with "unknown questions," reflecting the inherent chaos and search for balance within the human condition.
Antoniou’s technique is both experimental and expressive, often using oil paint to create rich textures and a sense of movement. From his introspective "Flower Series" to his more complex figurative compositions, his work remains a profound exploration of "the vibrations of being."
Based in Cyprus but with an international presence, he has held numerous solo exhibitions and his work has also been recognised through residencies, such as the International Budapest Art Factory, and continues to be showcased in prestigious institutions across Europe, including the European Museum of Modern Art (MEAM) in Barcelona.
