We invite you to come and admire new paintings by the French artist Gérard Willemenot, complemented by a series of works from the Van Noord Collection. Gérards' work exudes that wonderful Boschian imagination: meticulously painted figures, grotesque and touching at the same time.
After studying at the Ecole des Arts, Gérard Willemenot (Paris, 1943) worked as an architect for more than twenty years, until he decided to change course and devote himself entirely to his true passion: painting. He prefers to paint as finely and in as much detail as possible, making his own paint (egg tempera). This gives his work a traditional feel and lends the paint a velvety, almost medieval appearance.
Willemenot's fascination with the old masters, particularly the Flemish primitives - Bosch, Bruegel, Memling - is clearly visible in his work, both in terms of subject matter and working method. He likes to combine medieval mysticism with literature and symbolism. If you look closely, you can see that Gérard (like Bosch) takes pleasure in ironically highlighting human follies, desires or shortcomings.
