Gerrit Wijngaarden Dutch, b. 1963
Gerrit Wijngaarden (1963, Dedgum) is a contemporary Dutch painter whose work is defined by a profound sense of stillness and meticulous realism. As a self-taught artist, he has developed a distinctive visual language that transcends mere representation, evolving from intimate still lifes to a diverse repertoire of portraits, landscapes, and interiors.
Working primarily with oil on panel, Wijngaarden employs a technique that emphasises tactile precision and "substance expression" (the rendering of textures). His approach often leans towards Magic Realism, where he subtly alters colours and atmosphere to move beyond pure hyperrealism. By focusing on abstract values such as balance and contrast, he creates a "painted skin" that feels both physical and ethereal. The recurring theme throughout his work is silence, a silence that is rarely empty, but rather filled with a subtle melancholy or a quiet, underlying mystery. By stripping away the noise of the everyday, he invites the viewer into a space of contemplation and timelessness.
