Eric Boyer American, b. 1960
Eric Boyer (1960, New York) is an autodidact sculptor who has developed a highly personal sculptural language through experimentation, observation and an intuitive understanding of form. As the son of an elementary school art teacher, he was immersed from an early age in creative processes, working with materials such as paper, sand, cardboard, driftwood, plaster and clay.
His distinctive work in steel wire mesh emerged from a long-standing fascination with materials and an ongoing search for the medium best suited to his artistic expression. This discovery occurred almost by chance while working at a blacksmith’s shop, where he began experimenting by hand with leftover scraps of wire mesh. Gradually, he came to recognise the remarkable expressive potential of this material. This marked the beginning of a sustained refinement and synthesis of his artistic experiences and his early explorations led to his first exhibition in 1989.
Boyer creates figurative sculptures for the wall or tabletop as well as abstract works that are often geometric or biomorphic in character. While his figurative sculptures reflect his fascination with the human form, his abstract and vessel-like works focus more directly on the expressive qualities of the material itself. Boyer embraces intuition and serendipity, allowing forms to emerge organically rather than through forced or contrived processes.
