Giorgio Laveri Italian, b. 1950

Biography

Giorgio Laveri (1950, Savona) s a distinguished Italian artist, film director, and ceramicist whose work bridges the gap between the silver screen and contemporary sculpture. Throughout a career spanning over four decades, Laveri has become globally renowned for his monumental ceramic interpretations of everyday objects, transforming them into shimmering icons of Pop Culture.

Laveri’s creative foundations were laid in the world of television and film. After studying TV direction, he honed his craft within the legendary Cinecittà studios, working alongside cinematic masters such as Tonino Guerra. This professional background deeply informs his artistic "theatre," where objects are treated as protagonists on a stage.

In the 1970s, his path intersected with the avant-garde movement in Albisola, a historic centre for Italian ceramic art. Influenced by the revolutionary spirit of Lucio Fontana, Laveri began to translate his cinematographic visions into clay.

Ceramics is the medium through which Giorgio Laveri best expresses his creativity, creating large-scale works that reinterpret common objects like lipsticks, fountain pens, and film reels. These objects, enlarged and recreated with colored glazes and reflective surfaces, take on a sculptural dimension that plays on the contrast between function and symbolism, emphasizing the role of the object in the modern world. Irony is a key component of Laveri’s work, aiming to evoke a smile and provoke critical reflection on consumerism, pop culture, and image.

Laveri’s works are distinguished by meticulous attention to detail, a sensitivity to vibrant colors, and a preference for round, soft forms with a strong influence from 1950s and 1960s design. Laveri is a master of the complex "Third Fire" (smalto a terzo fuoco) glazing technique. This sophisticated process allows him to achieve the extraordinary high-gloss, metallic, and pearlised finishes that define his work.
