Lucie Sentjens Belgian, b. 1959

Biography

Lucie Sentjens (Brussels, 1959) is a sculptor who graduated from the prestigious art academy  La Cambre in 1982, where she was taught by the Flemish sculptor Rik Poot (1924-2006). In the evenings, she took painting lessons in Ukkel with Arié Mandelbaum (1938) and in Etterbeek with Jacques Muller (1930-1997), both well-known Belgian painters.

Her favourite subjects are women and horses. Her work is described as having a ‘direct, staccato style’. She often focuses on the movement and power of the animal body. One of her creations, the horse “Gregala”, stands at the entrance to the Bosfort racecourse. In addition to her knowledge of the material and her mastery of bronze sculpture, Lucie works with hammered copper (often masks) and practises calligraphic techniques with ink and brush. Since 1983, she has been a lecturer in sculpture at the École des Arts d'Ixelles.

Through physical effort and talent, she has established herself as a sculptor in her own right. When Sentjens talks about the act of creation, she speaks of it as a quest, a dialogue with the world, perceiving herself as matter in the universe that participates in a whole.
