Peter Bol Dutch, 1947-2024

Biography

Peter Bol (1947 - 2024) born in Eindhoven and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts St. Joost in Breda. He was a Dutch painter known for his expressive landscapes and richly textured use of paint. Working primarily in oil, Peter Bol developed a distinctive visual language marked by vigorous brushwork, layered colour, and a strong sense of atmosphere.

As the son of the renowned Dutch painter Kees Bol (1916 - 2009) and grew up in an environment where art was a natural and integral part of daily life. His father often took him outside to paint, where Peter learned the art of observation and daydreaming. While sharing a familial connection to painting, Peter Bol followed his own artistic path, developing a personal style characterised by freedom, intensity, and painterly courage. His brother Henri Bol (1945 - 2000) also became an artist and gained fame with his realistic still-lifes.

Peter Bol's work shows a deep engagement with the Dutch landscape tradition while remaining firmly contemporary in its abstraction and material presence. Colour and movement play a central role in his compositions, conveying light, wind, and seasonal change with remarkable immediacy. The physicality of the paint surface reflects his belief that painting is as much an act of construction as of observation.
