Victor Veber French, b. 1994
Victor Veber (1994, Lyon) is a French sculptor whose work bridges classical tradition and contemporary sensibilities. Classically trained and deeply inspired by the figurative art of the old masters, he also draws from the language of modern and contemporary art to shape his practice.
Before fully dedicating himself to sculpture, Victor studied literature, cinema, and philosophy in Lyon. He then spent three years working on the Cathedral of Strasbourg as a stonemason and sculptor, where he refined his craft in direct dialogue with historical architecture and sacred sculpture.
At the age of 23, he received the Art and Museums Society Award in Strasbourg and was invited to exhibit at the START European Art Fair. He went on to win the BMB International Sculpture Competition, and his work has been shown in Strasbourg, at the Taylor Foundation in Paris, New York, Barcelona and at the Opéra de Lyon.
His creative process is meticulous and deeply rooted in research. “It takes a lot of research, so I always start by making small sketches in clay. Once I am happy with the pose that I have found and the emotion, I start thinking about making it on a bigger scale.” He emphasizes the importance of planning: “This takes a lot of planning because you need to build a support that will be resistant enough for the idea that you had on the small scale.” Typically, he hires a life model for the larger version, which allows for precision in anatomy and a realistic rendition of his initial sketches. “This allows me to combine two things that I love: the composition with the smaller scale sculpture, and then have more room to detail and model each shape with the bigger sculpture.”
In 2020, Victor moved to Florence to pursue further studies at the Florence Academy of Art. Two years later, he co-founded a sculpture studio in Florence, where he continues to produce his work today.
