Gerard Willemenot French, b. 1943

Biography

Gérard Willemenot (Paris, 1943) is a painter celebrated for his highly detailed, imaginative compositions. Willemenot studied at the Ecole des Arts in Paris and, after 20 years working as an architect, decided to pursue his lifelong passion: painting. From his very first exhibition, he knew he had made the right decision.

Deeply inspired by the work of Northern Renaissance masters such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Hieronymus Bosch, Willemenot has developed a visual language rich in allegory, satire and fantastical invention. His paintings are populated by hybrid creatures, grotesque figures and densely woven narratives that unfold across meticulously rendered landscapes. Executed with extraordinary technical precision, his works reveal a world in which the absurd and the unsettling coexist with humour and poetic imagination. Like his historical predecessors, Willemenot uses fantasy not as escapism but as a mirror of human behaviour, exposing folly, greed, power and vulnerability through visual metaphor.

Despite their apparent playfulness, his compositions often carry a sharp moral undertone. Bureaucracy, corruption, human excess and existential anxiety recur as themes, embedded within scenes that reward prolonged and attentive viewing. Every element, from the smallest object to the most elaborate figure, is carefully orchestrated, inviting the viewer to decode layers of meaning hidden beneath the polished surface.

He mainly works with egg tempera on panel and is also inspired by the still lifes and the use of trompe l'oeil by old Flemish masters. His paintings have been widely exhibited and are held in numerous private and public collections.
