Marie José Robben (Loon op Zand, 1959)

Marie José Robben is a distinguished Dutch painter whose work has resonated within contemporary art for several decades. She began her artistic journey at the Koninklijke Academie voor Kunst en Vormgeving in Den Bosch, continued her studies at the prestigious Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, and further refined her practice at the École des Beaux‑Arts in Paris.

Robben's oeuvre is characterised by its rich colour, textured surfaces, and expressive handling of paint. Her favourite subjects include seascapes, landscapes, still lifes, and floral compositions, but she also embraces more abstract imagery. She deliberately avoids excessive figuration and detail, allowing her compositions to retain a sense of mystery and visual freedom.

Influenced by both natural environments and artistic exploration, Robben's work often evokes the shifting light, movement, and atmosphere of coastal and rural settings. She works in a variety of media, including oil paint, watercolour, and chalk, and prefers an intuitive approach to the canvas, sometimes working directly on the ground rather than from behind an easel, an approach shared with artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning.

Robben has lived and worked in Amsterdam and the Netherlands, and her paintings have been featured in numerous solo exhibitions since 1987, including early solo shows in the Chapelle des Petits Augustins in Paris. Recent exhibitions have taken place in notable venues throughout the Netherlands, reflecting her lasting presence in the contemporary art scene.
